It has taken me half the night to figure out why the training I saw today did not sit right with me. Now maybe I can sleep..... It was natural for sure, but based on human as predatory leader and not human as leader in partnership. Natural Horsemanship can be such a misnomer. No wonder Diz came home from his last trainer worse than before he left! A horse should never face anything alone... Herd animals dont work alone- not even the dominant ones (a dominant horse has one partner- the dominant horse of the opposite gender). A horse should face new things with guidance and support from its leader, resulting in the horse choosing to come to terms with something because the leader suggested it and so the horse wants to, not because it has to in order to survive. This is also why training with Grace is turning out to be so successful- We have gotten through her trust issues and she never faces anything without one of her trusted leaders (me, Ana, and Hudson). These days, if I think something is no big deal (like a saddle), but Grace isnt sure, she checks in with me and agrees to follow my lead. Leader in partnership.
