It is July 31st and I hope that tonight we will be half way to the mainland of Malaysia. As it was getting dark with P. Satang Besar we were hit by a powerful squall which did not quiet down for hours. The Fortress managed to keep us secure although the boat rocked and rolled enough to make us and pets miserable most of the night. A short distance from us was a local fishing boat and the crew aboard there did not seem to have a much better time of it than we did. They had to keep the engine going in order to stay put. There was not much point in staying when there was wind to be had in our sails, hence we were on our way before dawn and thoroughly enjoyed our trip to P. Talang Talang 01.55.038 - 109.46.994 which is surrounded by wonderful clear ocean. Perfect for our watermaker. We decided to fill our freshwater tanks, but after a while we gathered there was something seriously wrong. Upon inspection we learned that there was a big crack in the freshwater heater and we had spent a lot of energy and time clearing brine in order to flush out our bilge. We probably wasted almost 100 litres. Although difficult to be grateful for anything as we were drenched repairing and cleaning in the considerable heat from both Perkins and Northern Light (the boat is normally about 35`C by midday and now we had about half a tonn of a very hot steel to secure even more warmth), we were indeed grateful that we had not harmed our watermaker, nor generator by this. Our stop with P. Talang Talang was otherwise delightful and we were well and truly rested as we left before dawn the next day. We did not manage good speed the first 24 hours due to waves and no wind. Today, on the other hand we were rewarded by nature and enjoyed the speed of 7KT pr hour for a good while. No engine power, of course :D I just finished the book Who Fears Death by Nnedi Okorafor - you might also enjoy that one?
