It is a stressed Adrian. As some of you know, Ive been in Strong hospital since March 2 with a one day hiatus. The first diagnosis was cellulitis, which became absurd when the symptoms obviously didnt fit either the diagnosis or the proposed route of infection. When I came back to Strong after less than 48 hours from release, with a fever of over 101f, insisting it wasnt cellulitis and demanding they find out what it really was, the shouts of cellulitis faded rather quickly as tests (cat scan etc) started indicating other problems. Meanwhile, they are dosing me with IV antibiotics (Vancomycin) and hefty pain killers (which help, but even morphine doesnt get rid of the pain). Since this is after midnight Ill say yesterday they came to me looking solemn and did the privacy things before talking to me. I wasnt the least bit surprised when they said I have an infection in the bone(s + fragments) of my lower right leg - the one which was broken. worst and which had to heal until Halloween before they could try to put it back together. My reaction of weve kind of known that so what are you going to do about it rather surprised the doctor. Apparently all the solemnity and privacy was because they expected me to freak out at the news. Id figured it out when Id had to go in on the 2nd of March - that w as why I was so ticked over the cellulitis nonsense. After complimenting me on how well I took the bad news, he then told me the hardware in my leg is failing and may need to be removed. GRRRR!!! That I dont need. But he says he isnt the person to address that, the Or tho people h ave to talk abut that to me. My reaction to all this is - so give me the really good antibiotics that cure bone infections, lets hit this thing hard so it knows we mean it and gives up, and well address the rest of it as we go. His reaction is youre so reason able and sensible, and I agree with you, but the infectious disease people will be managing this so talk to them. So, we are back to 1. my leg has an infection in the soft tissues that now also involves the bone(s), 2. it can be treated with synergestically acting antibiotic combos, 3. the infectious disease team gets to decide treatment for the infection, 4. the hardware that holds my leg together and allows me to walk is being compromised by this infection, 5. the orthopedists are in charge of the hardware, 6. its going to take at least 6 week of IV antibiotics twice a day to cure my bones, 7. Im going to have to learn to walk again whatever turns this takes, 8. if they dont get this under control soon, the probability of loosing my lower leg goes up - again. Sucks. And thats why Ive been quiet lately.
