It is because of the diverse groups in NB that I have become an active community member I have contributed over the years to 11 of the groups Sheila Blackhead has listed. After the earthquake our family stepped forward to help Renew Brighton because of this we physically met with our neighbours/community. Our lives in NB changed for the better. I choose to look at what renew did, not what it didnt. They supported the inside out project, movie nights, music events supported by cassels, artbeat and markets. The opportunities it gave to students to create an active area that was sadly vandalised is not to be overlooked. NBProject is so amazing and continues to grow and support NB at so many levels. So I would like to say a giant big thanks to ALL the community groups. To say thanks for trying even though we experienced some failures. As for S.U.R.F the money we raised as a community is safe and sound and the next fundraiser is only 4 weeks away with the Rockabilly Show and Shine followed by the Rockabilly Ball. We need to show patience and support as we keep moving to future Brighton and know that there will always be those that support in action and those that judge harshly from a distance. New Brighton featured in Christchurch The Transitional City Pt IV because of its efforts to forge relationships in very broken surroundings after the earthquake. Have a look.
