It is frightening to see the extent the one gene one disease myth has been sold to the gullible public and physicians alike. The fact is every other day studies reveal the extreme complexities of the human genome. Earlier we had the figure of 1 lakh genes whittled down to 33k genes. Today the number has shrunk to 19000. Earlier we talked about junk DNA. Today we know that nothing is junk. Whereas geneticists were gung-ho about the idea of genes causing disease, the science of proteomics or the protein layer that lies between gene functions and their effects has put paid to that. There is no attempt to tell all these to the public for the dream of an ultimate genetic cure has to be sold to a disenchanted public that has understood the fallacies and dangers of modern medicine.
