It is important to understand that the whole point of good dressage is to help the horse. That is its primary function. Fulfilling that role fully and properly results in dressage helping us too. Dressage is about communication with the horse. As that communication is nonverbal, we are brought to a place in our minds which precedes verbal language. To work at that level is to understand a truth without self deception. What is said is done and what is done is what is said. There is no possibility of a story. That honesty is the nature of the aids. Horses do not deceive because of the synchronization of doing and done. This results in a dressage requires an honesty which is not easy for humans. The language of the aids is the truth we share between the horse and human. The practice of the truth of the aids helps us to find a simple and basic truth in ourselves. We can rise above our own self deceptions and find the proper ground upon which we can learn to stand in our own nobility and goodness.
