It is not uncommon to find these worms in raw fish. Cod (cod worms) and salmon are the most usual. Cooking the fish properly kills them. If eaten live, they can actually burrow into the intestinal walls of humans (and seals) and cause problems. As well as cooking fish (and all meat especially pork) properly before eating it, raw fish should be stored wrapped up or in sealtight containers in the fridge so these parasites do not make their way onto food which will not be cooked again before it is eaten. You should never store raw meat or fish anywhere near food which will not be cooked again before it is eaten, as not only parasites but bacteria can pass from the raw to the cooked food and, hence, into the person subsequently eating it. Poor food storage is responsible for many illnesses and even deaths in the UK.
