Ten years ago today, we lost my dad, Norm Litwak. My dad was a native Los Angeleno. He swam and played water polo for L.A. City College and Cal State L.A. before being drafted into the Army. After two years stationed in Germany, he was honorably discharged and became a seargent in the Army Reserves. He completed his teaching credential, was married at age 20 and a father at 21. He went on to earn his Masters in Education and to teach in the LAUSD for four decades, mostly 5th and 6th grade. My dad swam 4-5 mornings every week at the Mid Valley YMCA, where he was also the swim coach for years. His affinity for water continued well into his sixties as an avid SCUBA diver. He is remembered for his booming voice and his toothy smile, but mostly for his compassion. My dad cared deeply about people and was never afraid to show his love and enthusiasm with them. No boy ever had a more supportive and loving father. I miss you pops!
