It is now emerging that the cop killer was mentally ill, which is not surprising because shooting deaths are usually either crimes of passion or crimes of opportunity. This was neither as he had no clue whom these cops were. Despite him being described as a loner, the police union and their supporters are blaming everybody but the shooter himself, including the mayor, the protesters, the journalists and even the president. These same critics also seem to fall into the groups that accuse Obama of being a socialist because of Obamacare, which is far from perfect and far from socialist considering you are still at the mercy of private insurance companies. But what if instead of introducing measures that further divide police from the community like stop-and-frisk, we introduce measures to better treat citizens who are mentally ill? There is no guarantee it would prevent these incidents, but in many cases ensuring proper treatment is the difference between citizens functioning in society as law-abiding citizens and coming completely unhinged to where they end up killing innocent people or being killed by police who have no adequate training in dealing with mentally ill citizens.
