It is of value to occasionally take a step back, and try to understand the way business-minded people look at education of children. Let’s look at it this way: Educators look over the masses of school-aged children and see a field of wildflowers that is beautiful to them. Each flower may be of different height, of different color, even with decidedly different foliage, but each is developing and blooming at its own pace and with its own distinctive flower. The educator knows that each type of wildflower needs a different kind of care, and provides that individual care so that each plant may flourish. The disorder, the extra work, an unevenness of growth are all parts of what makes this field of wildflowers interesting and wonderful to the educator. Wildly spontaneous growth leads to those unimaginable moments of blooming that all educators treasure. Good business leaders, indeed, good political civil leaders need order in their world. The instinct of a these people is to take the field of wildflowers and make it into a well-groomed lawn. Each flower in this lawn is specially placed, in season and in location, to present when and where the gardener imagines it will produce the most effect. Any flower that blooms, out of place or out of season, is, by a manicured-lawn-type of person, a weed. If the whole yard erupts in the most gorgeous wildflowers ever grown, the work of a gardener with an orderly mindset is a failure. It really is good that some people in this world have the orderly, precision outlook on life, for it makes them good business leaders and good political leaders. It does not, however, make them good educators. Educators need to understand that this is the basis of so many of their disagreements with people of the business world and with political leaders. At the same time, business leaders and politicians need to understand that they will never make satisfactory lawns from fields of wildflowers, and direct their energies elsewhere.
