It is said that in the early days of Bruce’s reign he was defeated by the English and driven into exile. He was on the run - a hunted man. He sought refuge in a small dark cave and sat and watched a little spider trying to make a web. Time and time again the spider would fall and then climb slowly back up to try again. If at first you dont succeed - try, try again. Finally, as the Bruce looked on, the spider managed to stick a strand of silk to the cave wall and began to weave a web. Robert the Bruce was inspired by the spider and went on to defeat the English at the Battle of Bannockburn. Whilst playing Grendon this weekend was nothing like the Battle of Bannockburn, after the 200 run defeat at Overstone last week if most definitely felt like it. With an overcast sky, the Legends took to the field and subjected Grendon to the raw pace of Nick Walker and the swing of Rob Willis. With the score at 25 Kristian Barnatt took a great catch off Nick after which Grendon looked at ease scoring at will. But Nick and Elijah Glover struck taking 3 quick wickets between them. Enter Nilesh Jhala and James Martin who claimed the next 6 wickets for 20 runs - old dogs - same old tricks!!! The only bowler not to get a wicket was Rob but his tight bowling of 6-1-19-0 really put the screws on the opposition. Grendon capitulated at 90 all out....and those that had been there last week breathed a sigh of relief. Once again our adopted home put on a wonderful tea and the Legends were told in no uncertain terms that when batting to defend the straight ball as those are the only balls that the opposition got out to. With those specific instructions our opening pair of Riz Alam and Elijah Glover batted that truly showed their class. Running sharp singles and punishing the loose ball they raced to 50 within 10 overs. At 70 Elijah going over the top found the only fielder patrolling the boundary and that brought in Ben Willingham. Ben and Riz saw the Legends over the line with a victory by 9 wickets. Riz came 3 short of his first senior 50 and as Nilesh said - showed a 10th of his potential. Once again the Legends prevailed against determined opposition and with a side that consisted of 7 under 15s was once again a testament to how the Cradle of Awesomeness is developing players for the future. A special thanks to Lee Willis as our umpire today and for siring such a wonderful bowler and to Harry Knibbs who almost got a game. Next week we are home again against Obelisk.
