It is true that is their own time, Kennedy and Johnson were not considered to be on the left of the Democratic Party. But times have changed. Anyone who thinks someone like a Kennedy or a Humphrey or a Stevenson would have any chance of getting the Democratic nomination now is not paying attention. Nor would someone like Nixon or Eisenhower have any chance of the Republican nomination. I have pointed out these, what I consider to be self-evident, facts for many, many years. Tim Russert had an excellent program before he passed away interviewing at length both George McGovern and Bob Dole together. At one point they were both adamantly agreeing that Nixon could never get the nomination now because he be too far to the left for the GOP and that Humphrey could never get the Dem nomination now because he would be too far to the left for the Dems.
