It is very important to investigate Cecillias case and other cases of violence against transgenders proberly - with a defined line between what is common violence and what is hate crime - because in a case like this, there is no space for grey areas. The case of Cecillia should be investigated as a hate crime. But we also have to remember to take the problems to a structural level. In a society where the structures are transphobic (for ex. the health care system), it’s very difficult to fight individual’s violence against transgenders. The hate crime problem is not just about a few troubled individuals; it’s about a society that claims to be equal, when it’s not.
