It is very sad what winning a competition does to a martial art. - TopicsExpress

It is very sad what winning a competition does to a martial art. In the 1970s, Tae Kwon Do was one of the most formidable arts on the street. Today, it is just a shell of what it started out to be. Many other arts have gone he same way - or have added numerous cool looking yet ineffective technique. If you attend any of the many karate tournaments, you will see everything from people pumping repeated kicks to score a quick point, to people leaping and striking the top of the head an an ineffective yet point scoring technique. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has headed the same way, and the old days of training for self defense only are starting to go away. Here is a video of a recent tournament. The sad part is that the rolled up, backward butt scooting guy wins!!!!!! Remember - YOU WILL react to a real altercation in the same manner that you train. Even if only 25% of your training is not geared to reality - then only 75% of your reactionary skill will kick in.
