It is very very wrong to single out Islam. I do vehemently agree with with Reza. All outdated bronze- age value systems propagated by world religions such as Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, etc etc are equally bad. So it is wrong to single out Islam in that regards. I do understand the difference between the cultural baggage these religions carry vs. the core philosophical tenets. However, you and me “understanding that” at the academic level does not help anything or anyone. The functional institutions that represent these religions don’t understand the difference, and their followers don’t understand the difference. So you and I understanding that at academic level do not improve anything at ground level. Reza says that all Islamic countries cannot be painted with the same broad brush as Turkey/Indonesia is not the same was Saudi Arabia/Pakistan. Well, isnt the reason being that Turkey and Indonesia are less influenced by the religious teaching, and they are more modern? If Norway and is a better country than Uganda (both being Christian countries) it is because Norway is much less religious than Uganda and is the public policy is driven more by the modern moral zeitgeist than archaic religious values. I guess same goes for Islam too.
