It is with a heavy heart that I have to announce the death of Tom Magliozzi, co-host of N.P.R.’s Car Talk. He and his brother Ray have been like old and dear friends that I got to have coffee with every Saturday morning for the last 16 or so years. One of the things that brought Nicole and me together was finding out that we each religiously listened to Car Talk. Since then, we’ve had a standing Saturday date, listening to Car Talk and other N.P.R. shows while instant messaging on Skype. Now, that might seem odd for a person who doesn’t drive to be such a fan. But those guys were hilarious. Their infectious laugh, especially Tommy’s, was one of the main things that people noted about them. And it was fascinating listening to them trying to figure out what was wrong with each caller’s car—kind of like an automotive mystery story. Maybe my favorite part was when they would take calls about cars from the 70’s and before—listening to these guys making fun of each other and laughing uproariously while figuring out what was wrong with cars took me right back to my childhood, hanging out with my Dad and uncles while they tried to fix their 70’s cars. Brother Ray says that they’re going to keep airing shows that are anthologies of previous calls. I hope so—otherwise Saturday morning would have a tremendous hole in it.
