It is wonderful to hear we are creating branch life, dear comrades. This is the greatest contribution we can make. I mean you, the others altogether. In fact, if we were not assisting in the creation of branch organisation, we would have failed, in my opinion. Or at least, we would have all our main work still in front of us. Now I want to dispute, in a friendly way, some of what you are saying, comrade. One is that the ANC is not chosen. The leading role of the ANC is not a deployment, but is a logical, political necessity. Please let me explain what I mean. Democracy, and the National Democratic Revolution, have a purpose. Democracy is a means to an end. Morality does not exist in democracy itself. Morality is found in the purpose of democracy. The purpose of democracy is the construction of a collective “subject”, having agency, having free will, and being able to act upon its decisions; or in other words, being free. In the NDR, by extending democracy, we are creating freedom. Freedom is our moral standard. The slogan “Power, to the People” applies. Therefore the ANC must be free, which means that it must lead, not follow. Related to this is the question of the ANC as a “broad church”. This term is a misfit. The ANC is not an alliance of ideologies. The ANC is not even an alliance of organisations, although this appears, in its outside form, to be the case. What the ANC really is, is an alliance of classes. This is very visible, in any general meeting of ANC comrades. Rich and poor, rural and urban, all can mix in the ANC. This is a priceless quality of the ANC. This is what we are trying to preserve and expand when we build the ANC branches. But that’s just my opinion.
