It isnt scientific, but I can give you anecdotal evidence of the mind/body connection. Its real, its important, and its profound. What you think impacts every organ of your body, and it does so in an instant. Patsys pulse rate is a very real concern. Even though she is 3 weeks past the heart surgery, that splicing together of veins is very sensitive to blood flow and pressure. We panicked night-before-last when her pulse slowed to 37 and called Dr. Amkieh. He said rightly that we must have given her one of her medicines without first checking her pulse. We knew one medicine that required such a check, and such directions were on the pill bottle, but this medicine had no such instructions. We stayed up with her and gave her coffee, as the good doc suggested. Around 1:30 or 2 a.m., her pulse rose to 53, and I knew we were out of the woods. We have discontinued BOTH of the medicines that slow her pulse, and because her pulse is now over 100 after she exercises, we need to clarify with her surgeon in tomorrows appointment whether to re-institute those medicines. Meanwhile, I use that mind/body connection to slow the pulse. I talk to Patsy about a beautiful waterfall that has butterflies flitting over all the beautiful flowers and colorful birds flying into the trees, in and out of the sun-dappled shadow. Within seconds, her heart rate drops ten to twenty points. You need to know that you ARE what you think, and your body knows it.
