It just occurred to me that my incoming mail is an indicator of my age. Before I was 55, which was 11 years ago, the only mail that came for me were bills and general advertising. Once reaching that ripe old age, it gradually increased in volume. Now, there was not a day that passed without something with my name on it. I always thought that people forget you as you age; however, since reaching 65, I have become more popular than I even imagined. At 55, AARP started to hound me to join and receive discounts on many things, join the fight to preserve the aging benefits, and help each other age gracefully and with a purpose. This is a noble cause, and I did with the exception of divulging my age with asking for senior discounts. The money they spent on postage back then must have been astronomical. Insurance companies were another faction who wanted to make sure I was well covered. At 60, the volume gradually added to the pile of businesses and people who were interested in my well being which added financial planners, mortgage companies, banks, and health care companies. More people were highly interested in my well-being. I was beginning to feel like a movie star with the piles mailbox. At 65, the senders increased again to include, magazine offers, candidates, health care providers, supplemental insurance, retirement communities, rehab facilities, chiropractors, clinics, and reverse mortgage companies. I never realized how popular I was. I even receive invitations to free luncheons and dinners from lawyers and experts on aging. It is almost overwhelming for one person to take. This does not include the amount of email that fills my inbox. Anyone in these age categories or older can relate to this burst of popularity. With our numbers increasing, can you imagine the amount of money that is spent in postage, creative development of these pieces, printing costs, and legal review to avoid misrepresentation? The amount might be astounding, but it is all for us. For the young people, look what you have to face in the future. Since turning 55, we have bought three shredders, and these people have not requested a thing from me. Have a fantastic day for we all know what day it is. As stated above, relish in our growing popularity and enjoy every single minute of it. It’s worth it.
