It looks as if our neighbor Jerry passed away this morning. I cant say that I knew Jerry very well (weve only been here a year and a half), but over that time, I had come to grow quite fond of him. He was the vanguard of a neighbor for whom you made sure to promptly move your garbage cans back to the house, because you just knew it pissed him off when you didnt. He is also the man who, with a twinkle in his eye, took my nephews into his world to show them the intricacies of the collection of remote controlled airplanes he had been curating since he was their age. Jerry was permanently hunched over due to an operation that alleviated his pain, but also left him disfigured, an irony which made him a little salty, though he did his best to fight through this frustration and greet you everyday with a smile and a welcoming wave when leaving for work in the morning and returning at the end of a long day. Jerry was always there. And now hes not. And thats the point. Appreciate your neighbors. Cherish your loved ones. Take the time to smile and wave and share your joy no matter how tired or frustrated you are. I dont mean to preach. I just miss Jerry already. I take solace in the faith that he is flying his planes again, standing upright, and finally looking straight up at them again with wonder and joy.
