It may seem like the last thing a sane person would suggest, but I - TopicsExpress

It may seem like the last thing a sane person would suggest, but I believe myself to be sane, and I am suggesting that you and I “make friends” with our pain. I am not suggesting that you accept or tolerate abuse in any form…quite the opposite. I am simply suggesting that you adopt a whole new attitude when it comes to pain. World class athletes and even weekend warriors seem understand that pain can be a friend… “no pain no gain”. This may be a cliché, but it is also the truth. All pain has purpose. The pain in our chest can alert us to an impending heart attack…the pain in our joints can alert us to the onset of arthritis…the pain in our muscles can alert us to the possibility of over exertion. The pain in our relationships can alert us to the fact that life is not fair… that people don’t always tell the truth, and they usually stay in the relationship only as long they can get what they want, and then they leave. Once you know this…once you experience it, and accept that relationships usually mean pain…then you can take off your “rose colored glasses”, forget what you read in that romance novel, roll up your sleeves and do the very difficult work of having a real relationship. It is all possible when we are willing to “make friends” with our pain.
