It rained all evening. My walk had to wait till nightfall. The rain had seeped into the tar road, making it soggy and treacherous. I kept my eyes on the wet road, watchful for puddles and sodden leaves. And thats how my gaze was arrested- by a snowy carpet of star-like Arjun flowers. The sudden storm had brought this bounty to earth as well. Lost in their delicate beauty and their extravagant profusion I was brought back to my senses by the blooms themselves - by their perfume on the cool rain-laden sea breeze. In this bouquet of scents- of the flowers, the sea, the rain-soaked earth, of Night itself - Came the unmistakable fragrance of the Raatrani, And took centrestage. After all, Night was her domain - her time to rule the four winds. Who were these intruders in her kingdom of shadow? Smiling down at this petulant Queen of the Night was her beloved - the Moon. Now hidden, now visible behind sooty rain clouds. His pearly moonshine was lost in the cloud-stained night sky and failed to drench the Raatrani in its silveriness. Giving her another reason to bad-mouth the rain. And making the Moon smile down indulgently at his sulky consort, knowing she would give in with a smile. Truly - a night-time walk after a rainshower Is a secret door into the Kingdom of the Unseen. Did you like the poem above?
