It should come as no surprise to anyone that recently Game Goblins has been disseminating a lot of false information regarding the 2 State tournaments coming up with the intent to raise attendance at their tournament and lower the attendance at Game Zone Alpha’s. While it might make sense from a business standpoint, albeit it in a rather twisted way; I don’t feel it is necessary to do this and in fact hurts the magic community as a whole. So with that in mind I have up until this point, ignored everything that has been said or posted, and just continued on with posting my own events. However, at a certain point silence just lends credence to false information, so I’d like to clear up a few things about the Magic States history. Sunmesa Events has been the people running the Arkansas State Championships for the last couple of years which is why I have called it the Original State Championships. I was contacted to run a State Championship earlier in the year for TCGPlayer, which I originally considered until I was informed it was not the Sunmesa Event. It was in fact a $1,000.00 TCGPlayer Qualifier with a State Championship Moniker attached to it. The focus was to have 2 of them a year. I did not do this because the State Championship as I have known it is 1 Event, 1 Champion each year. I thought it was confusing to have a 2013 1/2 Champion in the Fall and a 2013 1/2 Champion in the Spring. So I turned it down and posted about it. It was then picked up by Game Goblins. To put it bluntly, since Wizards gave up the idea of State Championships a number of years back, there hasn’t been a true Wizards Sanctioned State Championship. SunMesa kept the idea and the fun of State Championships these last years. This is the reason I’m proud to host their event and will continue to do so. But in all honesty, the Sunmesa Event and the TCGPlayer Events can both lay claim to the tile of State Championships if they want.. Star City Games could even come out if they wanted to and post an event and call it State Championships, and it could be legitimate as well. Both stores are hosting a State Championship event, and I think everyone should get out there and attend both. It could be two great weekends of playing Magic, and having fun.
