It sounds a little bizarre, but its not without reason: Penn Medicine hospitals are making efforts to establish a public umbilical cord blood donation program. Umbilical cord blood is rich in stem cells used to treat leukemia, sickle-cell anemia, and other rare blood diseases — and it may have the potential to be used for the treatment of spinal cord injuries and heart disease. Our efforts to establish the program were mentioned in the Philadelphia Inquirer.
