It turns out that exploding spaceships are way kewler in fiction than in real life -- but if one more media ijit calls the COTS/CRS Orbital Sciences Antares booster a NASA rocket, Im gonna have to start boxing ears. Heres the Awful Truth about rocket ships: sometimes they blow up. The more you fly them, the less they blow up, but even the booster with the longest history of safe launches -- Russias R-7 Semyorka/Soyuz -- suffers the occasional failure. Their last first stage failure was an unmanned launch in 2002, and just like the one yesterday, vehicle and payload were a total loss and the pad was heavily damaged; but in that one, one observer was killed and others were injured. The more a design is flown and refined, the safer it gets; the odds get better but the stakes remain the same.
