It turns out there may be more to this story than originally thought. For those of you not in the know, a waitress at a Red Lobster in Tennessee posted a picture of a receipt left by a customer. On the tip and total lines, the words in the headline below were written. The story has gotten national attention and $10,000 in tips have been raised for the waitress. But wait, what about the guy who left the offensive note? Surely, he had something to say. According to him, he and his wife got their order to go, which etiquette holds doesnt require a tip, so he wrote none on the tip line, a smart move to prevent a less than honest employee from penning in a small bonus, and wrote nothing else on the receipt. If this turns out to be true, it brings up one of my biggest pet peeves of all time: When racist incidents are faked like this, people stop taking accusations of racism seriously, which does terrible damage to the cause of ending racism altogether.
