It was 10 years ago today that I introduced the Smoking Ban in Ireland. Recent studies have shown that nearly 4,000 deaths have been prevented in Ireland because people are less exposed to second-hand smoke. The studies showed a 26% reduction in heart disease; a 32%fall in strokes and a 38% drop in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease mortality. However we cant be too complacent, smoking still remains the largest cause of preventable death and disease in Ireland.
