It was 12:15 am when I looked outside the window, from my hostel room. I was hearing the noise being produced by the machinery, which indicated that labors are burning the mid night oil to complete METRO-BUS project of worth 4.7 billion. I was unable to sleep, because of the sharp sound produced by machine; it was about 500 meters away from my residence. Is it legitimate to work in residential areas with tools producing horrible sounds, making people unable to sleep? What about Ailing people? Although, for well being of natives. I had a momentary look on the road; I saw a boy searching for something he might has lost, probably something very precious. It was midnight so, I was sure it is something important to him. I wondered what exactly he is searching for. People passing by him seemed so concerned, whereas the boy completely shunned them. The curiosity exhorted me to observe keenly. Then, what I saw agitated me. He was searching something in polythene bag that contained garbage/waste. Indeed, he was looking for something valuable, that he might sell and gather some money to buy something to eat. What this project of worth 4.7 billion will give to these people, who are down at heel, searching for food in dustbins, garbage that we throw, because it is futile. I am not against development, but is this we call progress, keep on spending money on roads, buildings etc, while people in country are dying of hunger. It is ignoble. I believe progress cannot be made, when poor people are dying of hunger. Indeed, improvement is to make sure, no one dies of starvation in country. To full fill the basic needs are of paramount importance, and people of this country want development, that fulfills their basic requirements. March 10, 2014 Daily Times newspaper Headline: “The local media has been reporting on the famine situation regularly with pictures of malnourished children and their harassed mothers but the Sindh Government, especially the bureaucracy, did not take notice of the grim situation in Thar while the death toll was rising alarmingly”. At least, 124 children have died of famine. It is as clear as crystal that, our basic need is food. Fund/food allocation was not administered in Thar. Who is liable for the death of 124 children? Are projects like metro-bus more important than lives of poor people? Will these projects fill their stomach with food? Who is holding all the aces? Do we have cold feet to demand our basic needs?
