It was a common practice in Old Testament times for the women to sing and dance with timbrels when their men returned from battle. (See for example Judges 11:34, and 1 Samuel 18:6-7.) A similar event happened after Pharaohs army was drowned in the sea. Miriam (the sister of Moses and Aaron) joined the other women in singing and dancing with timbrels to celebrate the LORDs great victory. This short song is paired with the Song of the Sea, and is known as the Song of Miriam. Miriam is also recognized as a prophetess in this passage, one of only five prophetesses in the Old Testament. When Pharaoh’s horses, chariots and horsemen went into the sea, the Lord brought the waters of the sea back over them, but the Israelites walked through the sea on dry ground. Then Miriam the prophet, Aaron’s sister, took a timbrel in her hand, and all the women followed her, with timbrels and dancing. Miriam sang to them: “Sing to the Lord, for he is highly exalted. Both horse and driver he has hurled into the sea.” (Exodus 15:19-21)
