It was a small turnout but when the polls closed and the votes were counted Tuesday night, the first sales and use tax in Cave City passed. Only registered voters in Cave City and those living in the portion that is in Independence County were allowed to vote in the election for a tax that has the potential to generate about $125,000 a year, according to officials. According to the Sharp County Clerk’s Office, 94 voted for the tax while 79 voted against the tax in which one-half cent will be dedicated to “fund an additional full-time officer for the Cave City Police Department including but not limited to salary expenses, uniforms and any and all operations and maintenance costs incurred by the addition of the officer,” according to an ordinance passed by the city council in July. The remaining half-cent will be used “for any and all costs incurred to operate any and all departments covered by General Funds, including but not limited to administrative, community center, fire, park, police and pool.” Election results in the Sharp County were 79 for the tax and 73 against. This included two absentee votes and two early votes. In the Independence County portion of Cave City, 15 voted for the tax and six voted against, according to the clerk’s office.
