It was a tough week. The funerals for two innocent NYPD Police Officers are now over. NYPD and the entire Law Enforcement Community have buried our brothers with dignity. I would ask us all to continue to honor these two Heroes daily by saying a prayer for the fallen heroes families. The Ramos and Liu families have a lot of adjustments to make, missing their husbands, fathers, sons and brothers. There is no loss comparable that I know of. Out of every bad thing, something good does happen. I think all of us are more aware of evil and what damage it can do. We must take every precaution to return home safe to our families while still upholding our oaths to protect the public when they need us. That is what we each one of you and you partners do and we do it well. I am very proud of the outpouring of support from all of the Law Enforcement Canine Teams that attended both funerals. Nearly one-hundred canines lined the streets in Queens and Brooklyn to pay their respects. In addition to recognizing each canine team that attended, I wish to thank one person in particular; he should be recognized for organizing and coordinating sincere show of camaraderie. Lt. John Pappas (NYPD Transit Bureau) brought everyone together and unified all of the canines for the fallen officers families to see how much their loved ones were cared about. I know it took a lot of perseverance to coordinate everything so that the canines could be separate from the rest of the line up, so we could stand united and be seen by the officers families. It made a difference. In closing, we have very reliable word that both families saw the huge canine detail and it brought comfort to them in one of their darkest hours. That is what makes it all worthwhile. Lt. John Kerwick - USPCA Region 7
