It was an amazing week in Waterford. Such great music, and such welcoming people. Shortly after meeting me, musician friends Kevin and Rob took me out to the beautiful cliffs at Dunmore East. They showed me how to skip stones in the sea, and took me to a dry spot under the cliffs when the rain fell hard. I met a gentle old bartender named Andy Jordan who had lived there a long time, and I asked him where he was born. He smiled at me and pointed upwards -- apparently he was born in the upstairs room of the pub long ago. I had no idea when I came, but I was there for Spraoi (pronounced spree, a three-day-long music festival). On Friday, I was dancing with a pub full of Irish people to a reggae DJ. It got hot and sweaty inside, and some of us spilled out into the streets to dance in the cool Irish rain. On Saturday, a DJ put on the Fraggle Rock theme and the whole pub went nuts with everybody dancing their cares away. I ended up drinking whiskey in the homes of friendly Irish people past 3AM every night from Tuesday to Sunday. We were all so excited to discover each other! Ill be in Europe in December for a conference, and think Ill come back to visit all my new friends. Nobody lives long enough to live out the full range of human experience themselves. But talking to friendly smart people with different experiences and from distant places is a way we can help each other achieve that fullness.
