It was an extra special good night. First, right after work I went and had a solo supper at San Antonio Taco Co. Oh so good. Then I went to a Tennessee Works Parent Coalition meeting, and enjoyed the discussion. As I was leaving the Vanderbilt campus I decided to make a quick run by McKays, our local used book, music, and video store. You know, just for a browse, since I hadnt been in there in a few weeks. Right off the bat, I found a Calvin Trillin book that I did not as yet own, and only $0.75. Also serendipitously saw an incorrectly-shelved Son Volt concert DVD, one of my favorite groups. When Uncle Tupelo broke up, Jeff Tweedy formed the band Wilco, while band-mate Jay Farrar formed the band Son Volt. Of the two, Wilco has had greater commercial success, but Son Volt has turned out an amazing catalog of very tasty music. (For you old Missouri folks, Gary Hunt who played in the Mid Missouri Hellband is currently in Son Volt. Right now, hes on tour with Farrar, just the two of them. If you have a chance to see them, take it!) I also got a Loreena McKennitt CD of a few songs for the season. Nice. $0.45. An old Joe Ely CD, and one from Will Kimbrough called This. ($0.95). Best of all though, I got FIVE discs by one of the very best singer/songwriters around, Jeff Black. Jeff writes the kind of songs that just grab me and shake me around a bit. You know, in a good way. Did I mention it was FIVE discs!! Woo Hoo! I know this is hard to believe, but my total expenditure for books, DVDs and CDs was just $13. Unreal. I have to admit I feel a little guilty getting that much unexpected joy for so little. Now Im making tea and listening to Loreena sing Coventry Carol
