It was at least three years later, in 1906/7, that the Dresden artists managed to reach a comparable stage in their adoption of French styles. In 1906, they saw his paintings for the first time at the Third German Handicraft Exhibition in Dresden. Indeed, they even considered inviting Rohlfs to be an active member of their group. The plan filed, however, due to Noldes objection, though we do not know his reasons. That same year, Nolde had exhibited at Osthouss Folkwang Museum. He even knew Nolde personally, and the two had become friends. A year later, in 1907, Osthaus exhibited Brücke prints in Hagen, which first inspired Rohlfs - who was already 58 - to try out this technique for himself. He produced mainly woodcuts and linocuts, which he often coloured in afterwards and whose black contours began to have a considerable influence on his style a few years later. -Dietmar Elger, Expressionism, p.129 Christian Rohlfs Three Red Roses 1906-1907 mixed media on watercolor paper 27.3 x 38.3 cm Private collection
