It was disgusting for me to learn about Unit 731. I was looking up UNIT at the time, in reference to doctor who and was drawn to the article when I discovered there was a UNIT in real life that dealt with secrecy and such but as I searched it, it became shocking and grisly. Unit 731 was a Japanese science program that did only one thing ... find ways to kill people in new ways in some of the most horrific means possible including having the victim strapped to a vertical bed that could be inverted upside down where their heads would be placed into a large bucket of live maggots and eaten slowly alive over the course of sometimes weeks. They would be pulled out - observed and have the maggots eating out their eyes counted and how many had gone into the lungs would be X-rayed and counted before placing the victim back in the bucket. this was rather tame compared to some of the things they did - mostly to POWS ... Chinese and Russians all the way up to 1945 at the end of the war when Japan fell to American forces. But this is the sick part ... the ones that did these cruel things and murdered so many were not tried for their crimes. The files and staff were procured by the American Government for further study and ... testing. There remain reports of testing on American soil well into the 60s that remain unsustained and unproven save for some missing people that turned up horribly mutilated months later in mexico.
