It was exactly 8 years ago that the farmerdave website was conceived when Dave phoned me after getting out of the Big Brother house about a fan site Id created. He mentioned wanting his own site - so I volunteered to build one. It started life as promoting a positive role model for gay men in rural areas but soon focused on saving Daves sheep as the drought in outback Queensland deepened and the dams dried up. Next we were seeking votes to keep Dave in Dancing with the Stars raising funds for his charity providing support to struggling farmers during the drought (not particularly helped by the stars two left feet). The focus then changed to selling free range lamb direct to the public and then again to focus on dog training. That site is gone now – recently supplanted by the Dog Centre site (another site I started building 4 years ago) to provide a clearer focus on Dave’s dog training business. I think it’s appropriate to do a small memorial to the achievements of the old site. While I can only quote stats – there were 100s of feedback emails on how the site had a positive effect on many lives. During its near 8 year reign there were 6.5 million views. Dave posted about 400 blogs. The picture galley grew to 4,000 images from the farm, Dave’s travels and the various TV shows. Dave liked making videos (and I held the camera and edited a large proportion) – the video gallery grew to a 1,000 videos chronicling farming techniques, Dave’s travels & TV shows and dog training. Our Youtube channel chalked up about 2 million views. With the focus now on dog training and sports – whether I will have any ongoing role is unclear – however I’m proud of the achievements of the last 8 years.
