It was in the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month when the war to end all wars concluded in 1918. The import of that day continues to resonate, as we prepare to join together as a nation to say Thank You to all those who have served in Americas Armed Forces on Veterans Day - Tuesday, 11/11/2014. Throughout the National Heritage Area, in addition to local parades and remembrances, partners are finding many ways to actively express these thanks. Here is a sampling: Today — The Stark County Park District has a Veterans Day Flag Retiring & Walk - Exploration Gateway, 5:00 p.m. - 6:15 p.m. — The Akron Zoo offers free admission to all military personnel and veterans today through Nov. 11. Military ID required. Immediate family members receive 50 percent discount. Veterans Day — Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad will commemorate Veterans Day with a free, two-hour train ride through Cuyahoga Valley National Park for Veterans and up to three guests on Tuesday, November 11th. The train departs the Rockside Station at 3:30 p.m. This two-hour train ride is free for all active duty military personnel, veterans, and up to three guests. Seats are based on availability and participants are asked to arrive 30 - 45 minutes before departure. Military card and/or identification must be shown. Please call 1-800-468-4070 with any questions. — The Summit County Historical Society hosts a free program in the Carriage House. 1 p.m., Perkins Stone Mansion, 550 Copley Road, Akron. — At National Parks across the country, Veterans will have access to over 100 National Parks that require entrance fees for free. In CVNP, the Boston Store Visitor Center will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. —The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame + Museum offers Military Veterans free admission and their spouses get $5 discount off a general admission ticket on Nov. 11. Military ID or proof of military service required. — The Pro Football Hall of Fame has a standing discount for Military Personnel and Veterans as well as a number of ongoing programs. Wednesday, 11/12 — We invite the public to join us at 12:30 p.m., when The Stark County Park District, the City of Massillon, Ohio, and the Ohio & Erie Canalway will join together with Towpath visionary Congressman Ralph Regula to dedicate the final Towpath connection through Massillon. It takes place on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Viaduct. In closing, we join the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and our fellow citizens across the country in a celebration to honor Americas veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.
