Srimad Bhagavad Gita CHAPTER 6. DHYANA YOGA “Arjuna this Yoga is neither for him who eats too much, nor for him abstains significantly from eating, it is neither for him who is given to too much sleep; nor even for him who is incessantly awake.” After recounting the outcome of meditation Lord Krishna gives the regulations concerning the eating of food and the schedule of sleep habits that are to be followed by those practising yoga or the science of the individual consciousness attaining communion with the ultimate consciousness. One who eats more than necessary will dream a lot while sleeping, and he will consequently sleep more than is required. Relinquishing food altogether and observing complete fasts occasionally leads to a severe strain on one’s mind, senses and crucially the physique. Likewise a reasonable period of sleep relieves exhaustion but if the period of sleep is excessive it encroaches upon valuable moments of our human existence, on the other hand exaggerated periods of waking hours induces intellectual mustiness. Persons engaged in extravagance of either indulgence or denials are positively predisposed by the mode of ignorance and such persons cannot practice yoga. The word Yoga in the present verse should be treated as reference to Dhyanayoga or the science of the individual consciousness attaining communion with the ultimate consciousness. (To be continued)
