It was narrated that Abu Dharr Al-Ghifâri said: ``I said: ‘O Messenger of Allâh! (peace be upon him) Which mosque was built first? He said: ` Al-Masjid Al-Harâm (in Makkah). I said: `Then which? He said: `Then Al-Masjid Al-Aqsa (in Jerusalem). I said: `How many years between them? He said: `Forty years, but the whole earth is a mosque for you, so pray wherever you are when the time for prayer comes. ’’ (Related by Ibn Maajah and Al-Albaani grades it as authentic in his authenticity of Ibn Maajah) There are many virtues one can learn from this Hadith: The first is that it teaches us about the history of our ancient scared Mosques in Islam and when they were built. Secondly we learn that if it is time to Pray and we are in a situation where there is no Mosque or we are not in our homes that this entire earth is permissible for us to Pray on. Undoubtably this occurs in our live so it is a reminder that we must pray wherever we are and not delay it until we get home from the fear that we might overlaps the prescribed fixed times that we are commanded to pray in. Many assume that they cant pray on certain surfaces of the earth because the fear of it being impure and this is a big misconception amongst many arrogant people in our communities. Let it be known that the Sharia rejects all thoughts of doubtfulness and suspicion, and the Scholars have come to consensus that if one is to identify impurities through the means of three characteristics thus they are: Color, smell, or taste. If a suspicion of an impurity occurs and can not be identified though these three characteristics as mentioned, then verily this is not considered an impurity . Hence from this we understand that it is not necessary one requires a prayer mat in order to pray. There is no evidence that the Sharia commands you to Pray on a Prayer mat, but we are obliged to pray on a pure surface. Thus we have already as mentioned previously the conditions to meet this requirement. So there is no excuse for us to say there is no proper place to pray whist Im at Collage, work, travel, out with friends, etc, these issues are amongst the many ignorant misconceptions that is bestowed between our brothers and sisters throughout the ummah. We ask Allah for us to be amongst the people whom there prayer is excepted and correct.
