It was one year ago today that I announced my candidacy for alderman of the 49th Ward... In doing so I looked to set a new direction for politics here in this ward and as such set an example for the rest of this city. As I see it, running for an elected office is to offer oneself up to serve the public interest, not to make a career of it nor even a job of it - both which conjure up the notion of personal glory and aggrandizement. So in response to the often asked question as to why I am running for office, the answer was quite simple and common... I believe I can do better than what the current alderman has done for us over the past 24 years. If I didnt believe that, then there would be no reason for me to offer myself up as a choice in the upcoming election. When I labored over the phrase to use that I felt reflected our campaign, I wanted to be sure that it expressed very clearly why Im running and why you should elect me. After all, we should always expect better and demand the best of those who we elect and as candidates we should expect to do better and should demand the best from ourselves. Thank-you to all of you who have stepped up to show your support for our campaign over the past year and in particular to all of you who have volunteered and worked so hard to secure the signatures we need to get on the ballot - far and above the required 473. I look forward to a vigorous campaign and when elected, the opportunity to serve this community. Vote Gordon on February 24th, 2015 and together lets bring a new politics to our community, our ward and our city...
