It was perfectly clear last night so I had the chance to go out in my backyard and attempt to photograph Comet Lovejoy. Thanks to some good advice from Matt Trudeau, Stuart McDaniel and Steve Ellwood, I got a few decent shots! First thing I did was consult a sky chart then pulled out the binoculars to find the comet which is to the right of Orion and down from the cluster of stars known as the Pleiades or Seven Sisters. Then it was just a matter of getting the camera settings right. You have to be careful not to have the shutter open for too long or youll get star trails. As the Earth spins under the sky, the stars appear to move. When a camera captures that movement, thats called a star trail. My settings: Wide shot: ISO 800, F/2.8, 14mm, 8 sec Close shots: ISO 6400, F/5.6, 400mm, 4 sec
