It was rather lonely as I made my way to the toilets backstage on the set of the film Father’s day. Nobody around but a guy in a checkered shirt and jeans standing next to some sound equipment, almost beckoning for attention. I weighed my options and a chat with Robin Williams easily won out over the demand from my bladder. He was very approachable and seemed to relish the prospect of company. We talked for quite a while about all sorts of things until I brought up the sketch comedy show I was in at the time with a group called the Hot Seat Players. An off-shoot of an off-shoot of the L.A. Groundlings, we were a company of six performing our own material at our own risk. “I’ve heard of you guys,” Mr. Williams said, “got a good write up in the L.A. Times.” We chatted about ‘the business’ for a while and then he asked, “Do you love what you are doing?” I realized at that moment that I did and told him so. “Then die for it,” he told me with the most serious face I have even seen on him. To one of the most versatile and downright brilliant performers of our time, thank you Robin for doing that for us. The World is a better place because of it. But quite a bit lonelier.
