It was spring, maybe eight or nine years ago that Jennifer Ward and I were sitting on a patio of a restaurant enjoying lunch. It started to rain, but we were under a canopy so we sat and listened to the sound of the fat drops on the roof. At the table next to us were two sour looking women, who spent the hour eavesdropping on us and casting disapproving glances at our loud laughter. I concocted a little scheme to give them something to remember us by. I told Jennifer that when we were done. she should unexpectedly slam her hand on the table and scream, I cant just take it anymore!! before throwing her glass of water in my face. It was raining anyway, and we were without an umbrella, so we were going to get wet when we left anyway. Jen said there was no way that she could do that - that shed crack up and ruin the show. I tried to convince her that she could just run out, and the laughs would look like sobbing, but she said no so we went back to enjoying our meals. As we finished, and I was just about to push back from the table, she started screaming that shed had enough of me and that this was the last straw. As if we had rehearsed it, she grabbed the freshly topped-off water glass in front of me and poured it slowly down my face, before turning and running out the door, leaving the entire patio, myself included, with mouths agape. On the wet, one-block walk to the car, where she sat waiting with tears of laughter in her eyes, I thought to myself seriously for the first time, that this was the woman I wanted to marry. So here we are - ten years together, four of them married. Happy Anniversary Jen. You are the light of my life, and my always reliable, if sometimes reluctant partner.
