On the eve of the Civil War, slavery was prospering only in the cotton states of South Carolina,Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, western Tennessee, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Texas. Over this entire region, the average price of a slave, as already noted, had reached an astounding $1,800 per prime field hand.
