It was with disappointment that I read David Fawcett’s post on Allan Rounds post re The Royal Victoria Hall. If your figures are correct and it only has an income of £18k. One has to ask the question why? The answer is that Southborough Town Council has not over at least the past six years under taken any Promotional or Marketing initiatives. They have constantly refused help not only from those of us who do not want the theatre closed but also professional people who have volunteered help to promote the theatre. If it was hired out at say 30 weeks of the year that would generate circa £36,000 at current hire rates. Put on to that Bar Takings and other activities, to meet your figure of £60/80K is not beyond the wit of man. The Vic has far more stage facilities than any other theatre around apart from the Assembly Hall. If the Council would only allow volunteers to run the venue it could and would make money. Where will small theatre companies or dance schools go to put on shows? Why have many potential hirers been turned away? (Including some well known national organisations). Why did the Council not follow up the offer made by the National Lottery to assist in formulating a substantial bid for funding? Over capacity of theatres in the area WHERE! Health & Safety a mine field? Most of H&S can be accommodated by Good House Keeping and Common Sense. I believe the Oast Theatre has an income in excess of £100k per year and if you think that the Hub will provide a state of the art performance area you are deluded. Have you studied the proposed plans? The Theatre Trust has and they are not impressed with the proposals
