It would appear that on a Soul level we call in specific experiences and events for the unconscious parts of our mind to be made conscious. For the darker parts to be allowed to be seen by the Light of Pure Awareness. This typically happens when we are faced with a challenging situation. What appears to be happening is that, as fear is provoked and is felt, we have 2 choices. To keep it unseen, repressed, resisted, and therefore the mechanism is allowed to continue playing out (another similar event will have to be called in for it to play out again) OR we allow the fear into Love. As we allow the fear into Pure Love (the Light of our Pure Self) it can begin to be dissolved and transmuted, and the more successful we are in translating all the fear, the less we will have to call in a like experience.
