It would make sense for the polices first obligation to be to survive and to kill if they might be killed out of a sense of suspicion if they were just some random person conscripted against their will to fight a war against giant man swallowing ants that disguise themselves as people. However they deliberately signed up to be police, and they supposed to be preventing the harm of anyone innocent or not, and they made a promise to protect the people and put themselves at risk towards that goal, so they are obligated to put the lives of the innocent and the potentially innocent before their own where it is necessary. Thats kind of the reason there was a social obligation to respect and revere them, because they were people who willingly signed up to put the safety of others before their own. It isnt some Divine Right of Kings type arrangement, it is a Mandate of Heaven type arrangement. Police do not automatically deserve respect and admiration and then have the option of choosing whether or not they will do even the minimum of the jobs requirements. They are to do the job they signed up to do in its entirety and if they dont they are to be removed.
