Its DAMN hard being a vegetarian who craves soup around here. I work in Port Jefferson Station. Last week, I felt the allergies kicking in so I check the local Thai menu to see if theres an option. TOM KHA GAI...Spicy Thai Coconut Milk Soup with Mushroom, Lime & Galangal (Ginger Family Root)....PERFECT, its spicy, its all veggies, possibly even vegan since theyre using coconut milk? WRONG! I get back to my office to see they forgot to mention CHICKEN. [OOOh Ya Mudder FuXX - in my best Joe Pesci voice.] So today I wake up with the worst allergies of the year so far. Spicy SOUP is again the lunchtime craving, I noticed the local Mexican place added Spinach Soup to the menu recently so I called to confirm...yes, we have spinach soup....Perfect!...Ill add some spicy and away we go...WRONG! Its CHICKEN SPINACH Soup...[oooooohh - Yosemite Sam style with steam out the ears & everything]. Did I miss the memo? Maybe I was absent that day but has Chicken become the main ingredient in all soups to the point that it doesnt need to be identified in the title of the dish, or even listed in the description on the menu? Now, the Chinese place had some vegetarian bean curd soup BUT all the vegetables and ingredients were 5-10 times bigger than what could actually fit on a spoon which leads me to believe this place doesnt get the concept of EATING soup...they figured out hot to COOK it, I just dont think they ever tried to EAT it or perhaps some logic would set in hey maybe we should chop this stuff up so it fits on the spoon....Lord, somebody send some soup logic to the North Shore...Soups On in Stony Brook is a little to far to catch on my lunch break. I know someone is going to bring up Tiger Lily but Im just not into Cold Gazpacho or Carrot Ginger soup...even the pizza joint over here Completely RUINS the Tortellini soup by using Meat Tortellini. Looks like its Progresso & Siracha till I find a chef with some good ol vegetarian soup sympathy around these here parts. Who knew Veggie Soup would be so scarce?
