Its Election Day in D.C. About the only thing interesting on the ballot is the Democrat Party primary for mayor. While eight candidates are running for the spot, polling last week showed incumbent mayor Bro. Vincent Gray and Ward Four councilwoman Muriel Bowser in a statistical tie, and the other six as insignificant. Not being a Democrat, I dont get to vote in this contest (theres a Republican primary, but I dont even know who is running). Nevertheless, for those of you who are Democrats in D.C., I will encourage you to consider a couple of things. First, opponents have dogged Gray with accusations of campaign impropriety from the last mayoral election, but, despite aggressive investigation by the U.S. Attorneys Office, evidence to link Gray with wrongdoing has yet to be found. Im not saying hes innocent, but I would have expected something to be known by now, as hard as theyve been looking. Second, as a five-year resident of Ward Four, let me say that Councilwoman Bowser and her staff have not been particularly interested or efficient in taking care of constituent affairs or problems, and I know this personally both from having taken my city problems to her office, as well as helping other fellow ward residents with theirs. She is short and dismissive of us, and her staff is the epitome of the negative stereotype of government employees. Third, on a more city-wide basis, let me point out that Muriel Bowser is the District of Columbias representative to the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) Board of Directors, so if you love how the Metro subway and bus systems have been working the past few years, youll love a Bowser mayoral administration. Were I able to vote in the Democrat primary, I would vote for Gray, not because Im a fan, but because I dread a possible Bowser administration. Personally, when it comes time for the general election in November, Ill be supporting David Catania, the independent (and former Republican) city councilman-at-large. Current polls indicate that Catanias best chances are if hes running against Gray for the office. So, regardless of your opinions and candidate, go vote today!
