Its NOT about how HARD you can throw... Yes, arm strength is an amazing tool to have. Some are born with it, some work very hard to develop a little bit more zip behind their ball through proper mechanics and body usage. For the most part, though, with arm strength: you either have it, or ya dont. Heres some GOOD NEWS: As long as you have DECENT arm strength, one separating factor between good and GREAT INFIELDERS is: HOW QUICK YOU CAN GET RID OF THE BALL. This is a skill that can actually be improved and developed GREATLY as opposed to arm strength- which can be argued to be one of a players predetermined characteristics. Too many young fielders chuck the ball at a first baseman as hard as they can. Instead of saving the speed of the play until the throw- be EFFICIENT in your set up to field a ball, the transfer from glove to hand, and save time with a compact arm circle to get to your throwing position. Not all elite players have the strongest arms on their teams- some elite players do. Couple things are certain: 1. Its not necessary to throw 90 mph to 1st. 2. When proper footwork, a quick transfer, AND an arm are added together- that combination is SCARY.
